Prince William did much to promote water polo – and sales of Speedo swimming trunks – when he played at St Andrews University. Today, he is due to attend a women’s match between Great Britain and Slovakia at the Manchester Aquatics Centre.
“He will be wearing a lounge suit,” says a courtier. “The Speedos remain in his bottom drawer as he does not get much chance to play.”
Earlier this week, the trainee RAF helicopter pilot said: “I play football, rugby and water polo, not very well, but particularly pride myself in being a quite magnificent armchair centre-back at football and flanker at rugby.”
Meanwhile, Prince William has been appointed an honorary barrister. Barristers are lawyers who present or defend cases in court.
In a ceremony at London’s Middle Temple on 6th July he was also called to the bench, the ancient Inns of Court’s governing body.
In accordance with tradition, Prince William described his hobbies in a speech to the guests.
He said: “I play football, rugby and water polo, not very well, but particularly pride myself in being a quite magnificent armchair centre-back at football and flanker at rugby. And now you have made me a barrister I promise not to practise, except for the odd speeding ticket.”
